Petition calls for Palestine recognition

A petition calling on Switzerland to recognise Palestine as a state has been handed over in Bern.

Zurich writer Thomas Meyer delivered  the document in Bern, backed by nearly 14,000 signatures.

Meyer launched the effort a year ago, but it only gained traction on a second attempt, amid rising casualties in the region.

The petition argues that peace in the Middle East is only possible through a two-state solution and urges Switzerland to uphold its humanitarian tradition by officially recognising Palestine.

Lawmakers will now decide whether to take up the demand, which remains highly sensitive in Swiss foreign policy.
