Parmelin signs EU deal

Swiss President Guy Parmelin met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels yesterday to advance a new package of bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU.

The deal would update existing accords on air and land transport, food trade and free movement, while adding new agreements on electricity, health and food safety. 

It also sets out rules for Switzerland’s dynamic adoption of EU law and a binding dispute settlement mechanism.

The signing has triggered a strong reaction froim the Swiss People's Party whch held a demonstration outside the Federal Palace.

Parliament will have the final say before ratification, but the issue may yet have to go to voters.
