The lower house of parliament, the National Council, has given its full backing to a plan by the Swiss Football Association to bid to host the European Women’s tournament in 2025.
Those backing the plan say it will allow this country to promote itself as a sustainable tourist destination, it already has the stadiums and is politically and economically stable.
The captain of the women’s team, FC Helvetia in Neuchatel, as well as a parliamentarian – Corina Gredig – says it will support women’s football.
She points out 31,000 women play the game regularly in Switzerland.
UEFA will make the decision next month.
