Online shopping hits local traders

The rise in online shopping is having a negative impact on local retailers.

A large study carried out across the Grand Genève area showed online spending has tripled since 2018.

Traders want more to be done to make local shopping more attractive, and politicians agree.

The Geneva State Councillor, Delphine Bachmann, is campaigning for more Sunday openings which she says will help Swiss based shops to compete with those in France, which does allow for some Sunday trading.

There’s also plans to have more pedestrian zones in town centres to create a vibrant space.

The mayor of Gland, Christine Girod, says local traders need help – such as reduced rents.
