Environmentalists and politicians in canton Schaffhausen are concerned about the energy requirement of a new server farm being built.
The power it will need will be taken from a new hydroelectric plant installed on the world-famous Rhine Falls – which will restrict the water flow when it’s already low due to the dry winter.
The server farm is expected to use three quarters of the current electricity consumption of the canton.
There’s also concern no system is being put forward on how to use the waste heat from the farm.
The cantonal government says up to 12% of homes could be heated if the energy was reclaimed.
One Schaffhausen parliamentarian, Martina Munz, is blaming Bern. She says stronger federal laws are needed to make sure server farms are as efficient as they can be.
