New biometric card available next month

Swiss citizens will be able to apply for a new biometric identity card from 2 November, citing Monday's announcement from the Federal Police

Like the biometric Swiss passport, the card carries a chip containing a facial image and two fingerprints, and is designed to allow holders to travel within the European Union.

It is separate from the still-in-development e-ID.

For English-speaking residents who hold a Swiss passport, the new card offers a lighter alternative to carrying the full passport when crossing the border.
