Winter tyre compliance warning

Winter tyres are not legally required in Switzerland, but drivers can still be found negligent if their car is not fit for the road

That's the warning as temperatures drop and all-weather tyres grow in popularity.

The TCS motoring association says all-season tyres only suit drivers who stay in urban areas, cover few kilometres, and must carry the snowflake logo certifying winter use.

Anyone heading to the mountains or living at snow-line altitudes still needs proper winter tyres.

Insurance companies may refuse to cover full costs after an accident if a car is wrongly equipped, so the practical advice is to swap, not compromise.
