Idea to create safe drug dealing areas shot down

An idea by Geneva socialists to create areas in the city than could be used by drug dealers with no threat of arrest is being rejected by almost every other party.

A motion filed with the City Council urges the city and the canton to discuss possible options.

The socialists say it would be better to have the dealing take place where it’s unlikely to be a nuisance to most people – and certainly to move it away from schools.

But the other parties are scornful. The Geneva Citizens Movement says it could make drug use worse and encourage more dangerous products in to the city and the Liberals say that Geneva is a city of law and order – creating an area that allows illicit activities would go against that.
