Heavy snow coming - in the mountains

We’re facing several days of turbulent weather as a deep Atlantic low moves across Central Europe.

The system is bringing strong winds, heavy rain and, in the Alps, exceptional snowfall.

The Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research says more than a metre could fall above 1,400 metres, pushing avalanche danger to level four in parts of Valais and along the northern Alpine ridge.

At higher elevations, experts warn of large spontaneous avalanches that could threaten transport routes, while ski tourers are urged to take extreme care.

But if you’re not interested in heading to the mountains – you’ll be fine.

The snow line remains well above the plains and will only drop later this week, when precipitation is set to ease.
