Following last month’s tragedy in Crans-Montana, carnivals across Switzerland are tightening fire safety.
In Sierre, organisers have dropped the traditional burning of the winter effigy, calling it symbolically inappropriate so soon after the events.
Parades and concerts, though, will go ahead as planned. Elsewhere, from Monthey to Fribourg, security plans are being reviewed, exits added and staff trained.
And in Basel, where Morgenstreich draws huge crowds, firefighters will inspect dozens of carnival cellars, with spot checks throughout the festivities.
