Govt rejects service for women

The Federal Council is firmly rejecting the initiative that would require all Swiss women to perform military or civilian service for the community.

Defense Minister Martin Pfister says the government opposes the proposal, which will go to a national vote on November 30.

The initiative seeks to extend compulsory service, currently required only of men, to women, allowing them to contribute through military or social and environmental work.

Pfister argues women already shoulder much unpaid caregiving and household labuor and participation in the armed forces should remain voluntary.
