Govt looks to ban Nazi symbols

The government wants to ban the public display of Nazi symbols, including swastikas, Hitler salutes and SS insignia.

Under the proposals, offenders would face an on-the-spot fine of CHF 200, even if the symbols are displayed without any propaganda intent.

The Federal Council says current laws leave a gap by only punishing such symbols when used for propaganda.

Exemptions would apply for educational, scientific, artistic and journalistic purposes.

The government plans to introduce the ban in stages, beginning with symbols associated with the Third Reich.
