It’s expected the Federal Council will announce the lifting of virtually all the Covid restrictions later today.
The only rules likely to be left in place will be the requirement to wear a mask on public transport and in hospitals and care homes.
The only question is when will the new rules take effect? It’s unlikely to be immediately, it may be at the end of next month. But the government will keep the option to accelerate the relaxing of the rules if infections continue to fall.
The Omicron wave is subsiding fast. Contaminations are down around 30% with an average of 20,000 a day with hospitalizations also falling significantly.
Experts say the lifting of restrictions could see a rebound in infections – but the health system should be able to cope.
