The Geneva branch of the Swiss People’s Party has collected enough signatures to force a vote on a new lake crossing.
The Party says it shows the people are fed up with traffic in the city, and especially across the Mont-Blanc Bridge.
If the vote passes, it would require the canton to build a tunnel running from Malagnou to the Route des Nations.
The Party now expects the vote to be put to the people quickly. It says a mobility project should be launched based on needs, not on environmental dogma.
