Geneva residents protest eviction

Residents in an apartment block in Servette in Geneva are protesting at plans by the property owner, UBS bank, to demolish the building.

While there’s little doubt the building, built in the 1950s, needs work – those living there say they’re fearful where they will go and how much rent they will have to pay.

One resident has been living there for 47 years and pays CHF 1,600 for a 6-room apartment. She believes she will have to pay CHF 3,000 from now on.

The tenants’ association, ASLOCA, says it’s becoming more common to push residents out of working-class neighbourhoods and then re-renting at much higher prices.
