Members of the Geneva Grand Council have backed a petition which calls on French authorities to abandon plans for a new autoroute junction at Viry, just a stone’s throw from the Swiss border.
But the vote only sends a signal to France – it has no practical impact.
Locals in the French town are mainly against the plans, but some argue a new interchange will reduce traffic on local roads.
The petition approved by Geneva doesn’t actually oppose the autoroute plans, but calls for a ‘real Marshall Plan’ in favour of sustained mobility.
