Fribourg village taken over by canton

A commune in canton Fribourg has been taken over by the canton as a battle between the legislature and the executive means it has been unable to agree a budget for two years.

The canton had to set the commune’s budget last year and has tried to settle the dispute by putting in a mediator.
All efforts have failed.

Three people have now been empowered to take over all aspects of the governing the recalcitrant village of Gletterens.

Canton Fribourg says it will consider handing back powers to the local government when the circumstances allow.
