Initial Swiss dreams were crushed last night after losing 2-1 to Norway in their opening match of the Euro Championships.
The Swiss dominated in the first half – scoring the first goal amid a flurry of competent attacks.
But their luck ran out during the second half. Norway scored an equalizer, but then crushingly, Switzerland scored an own-goal after a flawed corner kick.
The game arguably turned on a VAR decision. Switzerland was awarded a penalty by the referee – but that was overturned due to an earlier off-side. Which was marginal at best.
Despite the loss, pundits praised the Swiss team for its competence and strength and there are still hopes the team will reach the knock-out phase.
There was also praise for the 34,000 fans that packed the Basel stadium – creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
In the other game yesterday, Finland beat Iceland 1-0. Iceland was a player down after a red card.
Switzerland is back in action on Sunday against Iceland – which will be a must win game for them.
Matches tonight, Belgium meet Italy at 6pm and Spain play Portugal at 9pm.
