Everyday goods, such as food, medicines and clothing, in Switzerland have increased in price by an average of 1.3% between June 2023 - June 2024
- that’s according to the Comparis Consumer Price index, in a survey with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (KOF) and the ETH Zurich.
Although food prices specifically fell by 0.4% over this period, they increased 6.7% over the last 3 years. Items that saw the highest price increases include margarine, edible fats and oils (+28.9%), sugar (+25.5%), butter (+12.6%), chocolate (+10.3%), bread, flour and cereal products (+9.9%), milk, cheese and eggs (+9.6%).
The causes of the price increase are multiple: Raising energy prices are driving up production costs and poor harvests due to extreme weather conditions are causing prices to rise.
Dirk Renkert, Money Expert at Comparis said “Given that food accounts for a good tenth of the consumer budget, it is all the more important to compare prices,"
The items that have seen less of a price increase over the last three years are fruits, vegetables (+1.1%), sweets (+2.7%) and ice cream (+3.5%).
