Emergency roadside phones may go

Thousands of orange emergency call boxes along Switzerland’s autoroutes could soon disappear.

The Federal Roads Office is reviewing whether the roadside phones should be dismantled.

There are about nearly 2,000 nationwide, but usage has dropped sharply as most drivers now rely on mobile phones.

Maintaining them costs around CHF 1m a year.

Authorities note the system still has advantages, however, because the phones connect directly to traffic control centres and automatically transmit the caller’s location.
