Town gathers to mark fire victims

The people of Kerzers in Fribourg gathered in the town centre yesterday afternoon to mark the deaths of those killed in an horrific bus fire on Tuesday evening.

They were joined by president Guy Parmelin.

Flowers were laid at the scene and there was a round of applause for the rescue workers who tackled the blaze.

Police have identified all the victims.

Six people were killed and five others injured.

Authorities say the suspected arsonist, a 65-year-old Swiss man from canton Bern, is among the dead. Why the man poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire is unknown - but at a press conference yesterday afternoon, he was described as ‘isolated and psychologically unstable.

He was riding the bus for 40 minutes before starting the fire - he had already been reported missing by his family.

The bus driver, a 63-year-old man, also died.

The other victims include two women aged 26 and 39, and two men aged 16 and 29.

Among them is Lara Baumgartner, a presenter with Radio Energy Bern.

Two of the injured remain in hospital. Investigators are continuing to examine the exact circumstances of the fire.
