Canton orders puppy destroyed

A puppy in Vaud will be euthanized under instructions from the canton.

The husky was imported illegally from Tunisia where rabies is rife. The canton says it is the only way to make sure there isn’t an outbreak of the disease.

The dog’s owner says there is a better way, the dog could be placed in long term quarantine to make sure it doesn’t have the infection.

But the canton says that would be very unfair on a young dog and living in quarantine could lead to developmental problems.

After the dog has died, its brain will be examined to check if it had rabies to then track down any other animal it may have been in contact with.
