The Swiss People’s Party wants to hold a special session of parliament to discuss this country’s seat on the UN Security Council.
In June this year, Switzerland may be offered a place on the ten-member non-permanent council. There are two vacant seats next year and Switzerland and Malta are the only countries that have applied. A decision will be made in June.
But some members of the right-wing party believe it could put this country in a difficult situation – especially with the Ukraine crisis - and will affect Switzerland’s role as a mediator.
One MP, Franz Grüter, says Switzerland may have to vote between peace and war which will weaken Switzerland’s neutral position.
