The Swiss army is planning to have its own satellite network in the next few years – the first is due to be launched in January.
Experts say satellite communication optimizes personnel.
The satellite has been designed by a Geneva company, Wisekey, its new generation which is small and light, weighing only 15kg. The company says it has the latest generation of chips.
It will also be able to communicate with specially designed smartphones.
The cost of launching satellites has plummeted in recent years from several million francs to tens of thousands.
