Authorities in the city of Zurich have agreed to encourage residents to buy fewer new clothes and to shop in a more eco-responsible way.
It is estimated that around 2,000 tonnes of textiles end up in the city's clothing collection bins each year. But most of the clothes are destroyed even though they are still usable.
Throwing away textiles and footwear account for approximately 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions per capita each year.
Authorities in Zurich have agreed to raise awareness among the population of the environmental impacts of buying new clothing, to promote reusing and recycling clothes at the local level, therefore contributing towards a circular economy, and reducing the carbon footprint of textiles thrown away with general waste or deposited in recycling bins.
