A young driver who was behind the wheel when his car crashed in 2021, killing one of his friends and seriously injuring two others, will be on trial in March, charged with intentional killing and attempted intentional killing.
The then 18-year-old was driving a Mercedes AMG, which he had recently leased. He and three friends were on the autoroute between Basel and Bern.
All of them, including the driver, known as Jay, started to inhale laughing gas. The driver lost consciousness for a moment and crashed into the barrier at high speed.
Prosecutors allege immediately after the crash, Jay threw the gas bottle into the undergrowth and lit a cigarette, despite the site being covered with fuel and his friends trapped in the wreckage.
One 18-year-old died at the scene and the others received life changing injuries.
Jay is also being privately sued by the victims.
A verdict is expected at the end of March.
