An elderly woman on social security payments in Geneva received a shock – a bill of more than CHF 70,000 to pay back for her care and benefits as the canton believed she was no longer living in Geneva.
She had to use her statements from her supermarket loyalty card to show that she does.
Her lawyer says her treatment at the hands of the state has been appalling.
The woman lives modestly in Plainpalais. But she does take a trip to the UK once a year to visit a friend.
She last went in December and stayed until early January. It was for this reason it was believed she’d left.
Her lawyer says it’s legal for those on benefits to take a short trip away and he’s considering filing a complaint against authorities for negligence.
