Mushroom pickers are being warned there’s currently no antidote available for death cap poisoning.
It can only take as little as 30 grams to kill. Symptoms include vomiting, seizures and coma – and then possible death.
The big danger is that the death cap can look like edible mushrooms, such as Caesar’s mushroom or the straw mushroom. Cooking it doesn’t help – it will still be poisonous.
The phone advice line Tox Info gets several calls at this time of year relating to mushroom poisoning – and death cap problems are very common.
They say it’s very important to avoid any mushroom poisoning at the moment. It’s unlikely there’ll be an antidote available until mid-November.
