Warning of fake traffic fine scam

Police are warning of an email scam in French speaking Switzerland.

Many people are getting emails suggesting they’ve been issued a traffic fine – and unless they pay immediately, it will double.

The email seems to come from the Geneva Contraventions Service.

But there are some giveaways. The email doesn’t mention a specific offence and seems to use terminology used by the French police, such as referring to a ‘police commissioner,’ which doesn’t exist in Switzerland, and mentioning points taken away from your driving licence, again, not used here.

Geneva police say if you get an email saying you need to pay a fine – but are unsure if it’s genuine – take it to a police station and get it checked.
