Warning of fake police

Canton Fribourg is warning people to be aware of possible fake police officers.

It’s a problem across the whole of French speaking Switzerland, not just in Fribourg.

Recently a man, dressed in plain clothes, turned up at an elderly resident’s home – showing a fake badge.

He said he needed the person’s bank card and details to make sure their money wasn’t stolen.

The real police say the imposters can be well organised and convincing.

Their advice is if you’re in any doubt, to ask them to wait and call 117.

If a phone caller says they’re a police officer – and pressures you into doing something that makes you uncomfortable, hang up and again call the real police. A real police officer will never ask for money over the phone.
