Voters uged to reject new Geneva tax plan

Geneva voters are being urged to reject a proposal to change the tax system in the canton.

Tax paid in Geneva, uniquely in the country, is spilt between the place of residence and the place of work.

The Swiss People’s Party, with its campaign – ‘I live there, I pay there’ wants to change the system so all the tax goes to the place of residence.

But the loss to the City and Lancy would be massive – the two municipalities would lose CHF 60m in total as they have more workers than residents.

But wealthy suburban communes would benefit – Cologny for example by CHF 5m, point out trade unions.

But those who back the current system say Geneva has the greatest level of wealth inequality between communes in the country – so the tax needs to be split.

The vote will be held on May 18th.
