Voters say yes to more solar power

Geneva voters have given the green light to massively extend solar power in the canton.

With a majority of 84%, the people agreed that all new buildings must be fitted with solar panels.

Another proposal that all suitable building should have them, was rejected. The cantonal Grand Council said that was excessive.

The Green Liberal party, which wants to see far more solar panels, is delighted at the outcome, even if it’s not exactly what they campaigned for. They note that initially the government didn’t want to do anything.

Companies that install solar panels say they will need to start training more staff and they call on authorities to lighten the bureaucracy needed for installation.
