Village being closed by govt

The government is closing a village – and everyone has to move out.

Mitholz is in the Bernese Oberland – and has the misfortune to be next to a old munitions dump, which needs to be cleared.
It’s already exploded and killed people – in 1947.

The government doesn’t want a repeat – and has ordered everyone to leave for at least 10 years. For many of the elderly residents, that is effectively forever.

Some are taking the walls from their chalets to install in new premises which have been secured for them.
Many have already left – but everyone has to be out by the end of the year.
The sign naming the village for passing motorists has already been removed.
