It’s been confirmed that there were problems with the recent local elections in the commune of Vernier in Geneva – and the new elected authority will not yet take its position.
The Geneva Chancellor of State, Michèle Righetti-El Zayadi, says some votes may have been tampered with. An expert report, especially on handwriting, showed something fishy happened with certain ballots.
The case is now with the courts.
If the court finds the fraud serious enough, the elections might be cancelled and done again.
The Chancellor said this is a serious matter that has shaken people’s trust.
She also questioned if changes are needed in how votes are checked - and even hinted that postal voting might need some rules tightened.
In the meantime, the cantonal government has appointed the previous administrators to run the commune – they come from the Socialist Party, The Greens and the Liberals.
