Milk producers are under pressure like never before. Prices are plunging, and some farmers have already sent healthy cows to the slaughterhouse, reports the NZZ am Sonntag.
The crisis stems from U.S. customs duties of 39%, slashing exports of cheese and chocolate, nearly 100 million kilos of milk now at risk.
At the same time, production is up 5 to 6% thanks to good weather and abundant feed.
The result is falling prices and a call from the milk industry to cut output.
Farmers warn that 25,000 cows may need to be culled to rebalance the market, unless emergency export aid can help out producers.
