UNIGE cuts ties with Israeli universities

The University of Geneva says it’s ending its research partnership with two Israeli universities - the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University.

The deal with Tel Aviv ends in 2026 and won’t be renewed. School leaders say this isn’t about politics, but they did say they’re very upset about what’s happening in Gaza and want everyone, especially the Israeli government, to respect human rights.

The university planned to make an announcement at a press event, but about 15 students supporting Palestine showed up early. It was cancelled as the university said it was unable to hold it in peaceful conditions.

The university also talked about some future plans, such as new top-level teaching jobs, a bigger campus and budget cuts.
