Unemployment climbs in Geneva - young and old badly hit

The pandemic has caused unemployment to soar in canton Geneva – and it’s the young and then the old which are being particularly badly hit.

In January nearly 20,000 were looking for work – the year before that was 14,500.

While the issue is affecting all ages, the leap in numbers is highest for those aged between 15 and 24 – up 38%, it’s a similar range for those aged between 50 and 64.

A labour market analyst from the Cantonal Employment Office says when crisis hits, the young and the older workers are the first to lose their jobs.

It’s not likely they’ll find a new job anytime soon either – the number of vacancies in Geneva is down 47%. That’s very high when compared to the rest of the country which shows a fall of 15% in vacancies.
