One runner died and three others injured during an ‘Ultratrail’ event in Haute Savoie.

Heavy downpours on Friday night made much of the trail treacherous.

Runners set off near Morzine on Friday, but the alarm was raised at around 4.30 am on Saturday. Organisers say four runners had fallen in a mountainous area. The race was stopped when news of the accidents reached organisers.

The runner who died has been identified as a 53-year-old man. It’s suspected he suffered a heart attack.

The injured suffered a trauma to the head. They were helicoptered to hospital.

Some other competitors were treated for hypothermia.

Investigations are now underway.
