Two nuclear reactors to be built near Geneva

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has confirmed that two nuclear reactors will be built just 70 kilometres from the Franco-Swiss border at Bugey in the department of Ain.

The reactors will be installed by 2035. The site already houses a power plant.

The announcement puts an end to months of speculation and debate. Environmentalists from France and Switzerland had strongly objected to the prospect of nuclear reactors in the region but to no avail.

The installation of two nuclear reactors in Ain is part of a wider construction programme of six reactors in France, costing an estimated €52 billion. The programme is part of France’s efforts to reach net zero by 2050.
