Two climbers have been killed by a rockfall on Mont Blanc as an early-summer heatwave leaves the standard route dangerously dry.
A Czech mountain guide and one of his clients died in the Goûter couloir at around 2:30 on Wednesday morning, on the most exposed section of the ascent.
A third climber was pulled out unhurt and taken to hospital in Sallanches.
Several guides have already stopped taking clients to the summit, and the mayor of Saint-Gervais warns the refuges may have to close if conditions worsen.
