Thousands took to the streets on Saturday to protest the war in Ukraine. The biggest was in Zurich with 40,000 marching under the slogan of ‘Peace Now’.

There were also calls for Switzerland to do more about commodity trading which is carried out in Switzerland to make sure sanctions have a real effect.

The Green Party says this country need to do more to cut its reliance on Russian energy imports.

In Geneva, around 3,500 marched. Running from the Place Neuve to the Palais des Nations the demonstration started with speeches, including from the Mayor of Geneva, Frédérique Perler denouncing the bombings and the flouting of international law.

The protestors blocked the city centre during the march - taking over the Mont-Blanc Bridge.

The people of Geneva continued to show their support for Ukraine later in the day. For the first time since the reformation, 486 years ago, Mass was celebrated at the Saint-Pierre cathedral.

While worshippers were there to mark the beginning of Lent, the situation in Ukraine dominated with prayers for the end of the violence.
