This weekend's votes

Voters are heading to the polls this weekend – there are two federal votes and several cantonal issues.

The main national issue is the reform of property tax. Currently home owners have to pay a tax based on what would be the rental value of the property.

The tax is seen as a hindrance to property ownership and unfair.

The vote also includes a change in the law which will allow cantons to place a tax on second homes.

Support for the change has been waning according to pollsters – while home owners back the change, tenants feel the potential impact on tax revenue will be negative for them.

The other national vote is on electronic ID. It’s backed by the government and all parties, except the Swiss People’s Party.

It will allow people to prove their identity online.

In Geneva, people will be deciding on whether to strengthen pedestrian infrastructure and make walking a priority.

Also, should there be more non-profit cooperative housing in the canton?

And a move to protect police officers from legal action launched by individuals. Charges could only be brought by the authorities.

There are also some proposed changes to cantonal financial laws.
