This country too depedent on US tech

Switzerland has an unhealthy dependence on US tech firms.

This country is sending billions to the United States for digital services. In 2023 alone, CHF 49 bn flowed across the Atlantic for software licenses and IT services, while only CHF 28 bn came back the other way.

That leaves a CHF 21 bn deficit - something US President Donald Trump would never accept if the roles were reversed.

Critics say Switzerland’s reliance on US tech giants is risky. Professor Matthias Stürmer of Bern University of Applied Sciences argues that billions could instead be invested in European solutions, making the country less vulnerable to foreign governments and companies.

He’s set up a  “Sovereign Digital Switzerland” network. The group is pushing for alternatives, and interest is growing fast.

More than 150 participants have already signed up for a launch event later this month.
