Third lane between Geneva and Nyon green-lit

A1 - (c) Marc Mongenet

The much debated third lane on the A1 autoroute between Geneva and Nyon has taken a major step forward after the National Council voted in favour.

The timetable for the new lane has been pushed forward. There was already general acceptance the go ahead would be given for work to start after 2030 – but now it will be earlier.

The main reason for the change is the new Federal Councillor, Albert Rösti. He’s been a long supporter of improving the road network.

Detractors say more lanes will just mean more traffic and other ideas need to be explored, such as road pricing.

The new lane won’t be ready before 2030.

It still needs to be voted on by the Council of States, but that’s expected to pass.
