The rain is good news for water tables

While the heavy rain over the last few weeks has caused flooding and alerts across the country, it has been very good news for the water tables.

On average, rainfall hit 400 litres per square metre. That’s normally four months of rain.

Over the hot summer, underground water levels hit their lowest levels for years, but the wet weather has already brought them back to around 80% of their capacity. And it's not even winter yet.

A hydrogeologist in canton Vaud, Marc Affolter, says the snow fall will also help in the spring when it starts to melt.

Full water tables will mean there should be enough to carry us though a dry summer.
