Switzerland won't join Olympic boycott

Beijing Olympics

Switzerland won’t be joining in the diplomatic boycott of the winter Olympic Games due to be held in China in February.

Mainly English-speaking countries have said they won’t be sending diplomats to China to protest its human rights record.

The United States, Australia, the UK and Canada are not sending any official representation. The move doesn’t affect the athletes.

The foreign minister Ignazio Cassis, says Switzerland will not join the boycott by Anglo-Saxon nations, but did say Switzerland expects China to respect its obligations under international law – including human rights protection.
