The government has announced that Switzerland will follow the EU on applying new regulations for cars, trucks and buses.

In a major report, the Federal Road Office, says the rule changes have the potential to save many lives.

From 2024 all new cars sold will have many different safety features installed, such as anti-collision automatic braking systems, a computer which may be able to detect if the driver is over tired, rear-view cameras for reversing – although they are already in many cars now.

There’s also a proposal for a system which allows for a breathalyzer to be installed which would stop the car from starting unless the driver gives a clear test.

Other rules will come in for buses and trucks to make sure the driver keeps to their time limits before having to take a break Although tachographs are common now - newer ones will be tamper proof and linked to satellite navigation systems.
