Switzerland says it’s ready to help France treat covid patients as a third wave overwhelms that country’s health system.
French hospitals in the neighbouring departments of Haute Savoie and Ain have stopped non-urgent operations for at least the next two weeks.
Any formal request for help will have to be handled by Bern, but authorities in Geneva say solidarity with friends and neighbours will always be important.
Switzerland also helped France out during the first wave – a gesture rewarded by the French with a Swiss army presence at the Bastille Day Parade in June last year.
