Switzerland should follow other European countries and offer incentives to American academics who feel bullied in the United States to come and continue their research here.
That’s a motion being out forward by two Swiss senators – and it’s receiving wide support from all sides, including some traditionally anti-immigration parties, such as the Geneva Citizens Movement.
Its National Council Member, Mauro Poggia, says Swiss raw material is our ‘grey matter’ – and the country can’t be left behind.
One of the senators, Baptiste Hurni, points out the French Aix-Marseille University has allocated EUR 15m to attract talent from the States.
But it’s not just cash – the idea would be also to streamline and accelerate admin procedures.
It’s thought the salaries already paid to professors in here will be attractive to US based researchers.
