Switzerland running low on potatoes

We’ve run out of potatoes! Last year’s harvest was hit badly by wet weather and lockdowns meant more people were cooking potatoes at home.

The Federal Agriculture Office is allowing 40,000 tonnes of potatoes to be imported over the next 5 months.

There was a lack of the crop last year as well, 25,000 tonnes were imported in 2021.

Swiss potato consumption is quite low compared to the rest of Europe. The average person here eats 45 kilos a year – in the rest of Europe it’s 60 kilos.
